Genoa-Lisboa Sketch Connection - January: Narrow streets / Janeiro: Ruas estreitas

This is the second of a series of 12 sketchers that Valentina Raiola and I will post throughout the year 2020, recording the similarities between our two cities.

The waterfront of Lisboa, on the Tejo river, is 17km long, but for many years, most of it was only partially accessible and difficult to get to. Between shipping containers, port equipment and the railway line along the shore towards the ocean, just a few spots were available to promenade. Nowadays, the city is improving its relationship with the river, and giving the waterfront back to its citizens. One place that was always accessible, despite varying in importance, is the Cais das Colunas. Statespeople used it as a noble entrance into the city. Merchants would buy goods fresh from the overseas trading here, before anywhere else. Revolutions held their stand in the nearby Praça do Comércio, and governments established their headquarters in the surrounding colonnaded buildings.

Nowadays it’s the favorite selfie spot for tourists. Still it feels good to be this close to the water.

Este é o segundo de uma série de 12 desenhos que a Valentina Raiola e eu iremos publicar durante o ano de 2020, registando as semelhanças entre as nossas duas cidades.

A frente ribeirinha de Lisboa, sobre o Tejo, tem 17km de comprimento, mas durante muitos anos, a maior parte estava apenas parcialmente acessível ao público e era difícil de lá chegar. Entre contentores, equipamento portuário e a linha de comboio marginal, apenas alguns pontos estavam disponíveis para passear. Hoje em dia, a cidade está a melhorar a sua relaçaõ com o rio, devolvendo a frente ribeirinha aos cidadãos. Um lugar que sempre esteve acessível, apesar da importância variável, é o Cais das Colunas. Governantes usaram-no como entrada nobre da cidade. Comerciantes compravam mercadorias frescas das rotas comerciais marítimas, aqui antes de em qualquer outro lugar. Revoluções resistiram na Praça do Comércio próxima, e governos estabeleceram os seus quartéis-generais nas arcadas vizinhas.

Hoje em dia, o Cais das Colunas é o selfie spot favorito para os turistas. Ainda assim, sabe bem estar próximo da água.
