Sardegna-Milano-Bergamo

June 2022

I was commissioned to sketch live at a wedding in Sardinia, as part of my work with The Wedding Sketchers. It was our second international gig, and the second one in Italy. This time, the rice trail took me to the magnificent Mediterranean island!

Equipped with a rental scooter and based in a friendly family home in the countryside, I was ready to explore northeastern Sardinia in the day and a half I had off work. Every stretch of the coast has a magical grove or beach to explore. Every little town has its pastry shop. There are scooters and boats all around. Despite all this action, and the challenges of mass tourism, the island still maintains its incredibly pristine Mediterranean charm.

The flight back home took me through Milano and Bergamo, so I decided to extend my layover for a day, to finally get to know this part of the country. Milano is, of course, a very cosmopolitan city, and with a huge tourist industry. Still, thanks to the tips by fellow sketcher Tomás Reis, I was able to spend most of my day surrounded by natives, enjoying an authentic Milanese experience, and even finding my way to a Cartier-Bresson exhibition and a small Comic-con that featured local cosplayer Himorta!

The old medieval town of Bergamo deserved a quick two-hour visit before the flight back home in the nearby airport. The new town below contrasts sharply with the old walled town upon the steep hill.
